About Instructor
THIS COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT IN PERSON AT SMITHSONIAN STUDIO ARTS, WASHINGTON, DC. Signs ups through the Smithsonian and will begin in late November. Smithsonian members are given priority notification.
This comprehensive workshop covers the key knowledge and techniques needed to create unique fine mosaic jewelry. Learn about topics including jewelry-base selection, adhesive choice, and suitable tesserae, and get experience in the skills of precision cutting, artistic laying techniques, and working on a small scale. The instructor provides lots of great tips and individual attention as you create beautiful silver-plate mosaic pendants using mosaic gold, smalti, semiprecious stones, millefiori, and more.
There is a separate $85 supply fee payabe to the instructor at the beginning of class. Check, cash or Venmo.
Mosaic experience is helpful, but not required; all skill levels are welcome.
Supply fee includes:
- 2 “practice bases”
- 2 base metal “findings”, size ranges 32.5mm square to 42mm x 21mm
- 2 oz Apoxie Sculpt
- Generous selection of small scale mosaic materials: gold smalti, colored smalti, art glass, tiny ceramic tiles, millefiori, filati
- Sticky paper for ‘reverse method”
- Apoxie Sculpt Solvent
- Other colors of Apoxie Sculpt (kit includes black)
Students need to provide the following:
- Mosaic wheel Tool* the plates CAN NOT MOVE. Instructor will loan if you do not own.
- Tweezers (recommend amazon, search jewelry tweezers, pointed and delicate are best) https://amzn.to/3IxR1S0
- Palette Knife (for mixing and spreading adhesive), metal better than plastic
- Safety Glasses
- Scissors
- Favorite positioning tools (dental tools, things that help you “position” your tiles when your fingers are too big)
LePonnit wheeled nipper or Sea Bell nipper are the BEST choice for this workshop. Remember always purchase the best tools you can afford, they save you money in the long term! You can purchase from Witsend Mosaics
