Exterior Mosaics – all levels
About Instructor

Workshop will be held at Anything in Stained Glass, 5104 Pegasus Dr., Frederick, MD 21704, 800-462-1209. They handle sign ups and manage the roster. Class size limited!
This workshop is essential for anyone interested in creating mosaics for outside applications and gardens. Using stained glass, we will cover how to put mosaics together for permanent outdoor use (surviving freeze/thaw).
The workshop begins with a comprehensive review of all materials suited for exterior applications, including glass and ceramic. Students learn how to test tiles and other tesserae to determine feasibility for exterior application. The lecture covers exterior substrates, adhesives, setting, grouting, sealing, etc.
There is so much to learn when making mosaics for outside, and the suggested projects perfectly balance creativity and technical challenges. The projects have our workshop time frame in mind. You will learn to mix thin-set mortar and tons of tricks to work with this all-important exterior-rated adhesive.
Recommended Project Options:
Mosaic House Number or Small Wall hanging: The instructor provides the appropriate exterior-rated substrate and hanging hardware.
Mosaic Stepping Stone: This is a great project as the first exterior mosaic artwork. Students provide own stepping stone (Home Depot, Lowes)
A separate supply fee of $50 includes Wediboard with hanging system (a lightweight exterior rated substrate), 12 x 12 or 11×14, or thereabouts, thin-set mortar adhesive, and grout. If students bring their stepping stone, the supply fee is reduced by $5.
The instructor will contact students in advance to ensure appropriate substrate is provided and to answer questions/concerns about your design.
This workshop is suited for anyone new to mosaics or folks wishing to take their work to a new level. Students can expect a great deal of personal instruction and guidance and no question will go unanswered!
If you own please provide your own glass cutting tools, scorer, pliers, and mosaic wheel tool as well as tweezers, palette knife for spreading adhesive, safety glasses, laytex gloves, mask (both needed for grouting) and an apron.
Students responsible for providing their own glass, Anything in Stained Glass generously allows FREE access to their scrap glass collection, Yummy! ATISH store open throughout workshop hors for your covenience.
Previous stained glass or mosaic experience is helpful but not required.
This is a very popular workshop!
