This workshop held at GLEN ECHO PARK, Glen Echo, MD.
If you love patterning, color, texture, and plenty of shine, this introduction to the ancient art of mosaics—with a contemporary twist—is the perfect workshop for you. Participants make beautiful mosaic tapestries for interior display from a wide variety of materials.
Create your original designs from a generous selection that includes glass and ceramic tiles, shiny glass, ball chain, costume jewelry, and beads (included in the supply fee). Participants may supplement the offerings with items such as Swarovski crystals, rhinestone chain, iridescent beads, millefiori, sequined trims, and anything that sparks the imagination.
Your supply fee covers all the materials you will need, although you are welcome to bring personal items such as costume jewelry, vintage china and beads.A supplemental supply list will be sent to students 2 weeks prior to workshop. Our tapestries will measure 10″ x 6″.
We have offered this project in the past in a smaller format, we are excited to offer in this larger project version.
Pre-colored thin-set mortar is used to adhere tesserae to a concrete setting bed, and the finished tapestries are textural and remain ungrouted. No experience is necessary to participate.
This project is inspired by Laurel Skye, a dear friend who left us this past year, we urge you to read her book “Mosaic Renaissance: Reviving Classic Tile Art With Millefiori” available on amazon.com.
