Introduction to Exterior Mosaics is essential for anyone interested in creating mosaics for outside applications. We will cover how to put mosaics together for permanent outdoor use (surviving freeze/thaw) using stained glass and other glass products.
Workshop kicks off with a comprehensive review of all materials suited for exterior applications including glass and ceramic. Students learn how test tiles and other tesserae to determine feasibility for exterior application. Lecture and picture presentation will also cover exterior substrates, adhesives, setting, grouting, sealing and installation overview.
We design and create a 2-dimensional wall hanging or a garden paver. Possibilities include house numbers, small murals or nameplates. Experience with stained glass or mosaic making helpful but not required. Friday evening we begin with a lecture and picture presentation about exterior mosaics and prepare our substrates. Saturday & Sunday are full working days filled with countless conversations and tips about creating exterior mosaics. Sunday we will cover finishing techniques, a grout demonstration, friendly critique and Q & A. Works will not be grouted during workshop hours, students will be sent home with a grout kit and the knowledge and confidence for this final step on your own.
Learn about selecting substrates, materials and adhesives that will endure weather year round. Our adhesive is thin-set. Included in workshop supply fee is your wall hanging substrate, thin-set, grout and a GENEROUS selection of glass materials. If you have very specific color preferences please bring those materials. Feel free to contact instructor with any questions or concerns.
Students are asked to bring their own concrete paver, if that is your project choice, measuring one square foot (round or square, available from Home Depot, Lowes, garden center, etc.) Supply fee reduced by $10 if you select this option. Otherwise instructor will provide substrates measuring 12″ x 12″ or 14″ x 10.” Students provide their own glass cutting tools, scorer, pliers and mosaic wheel tool as well as tweezers, palette knife for spreading adhesive and an apron. Instructor will bring patterns, although students are welcome to do their own designs.
Previous stained glass or mosaic experience helpful but not required. If you do not own glass cutting tools, scorer, pliers and mosaic wheel tool contact instructor and we will loan, do not go and buy!
