I’m thrilled that you’re considering a custom mosaic artwork or an architectural installation. Commissioning a mosaic is a meaningful investment, and I’m here to guide you through the process every step of the way. Below are some helpful details to keep in mind as we begin planning your unique piece.
General Pricing Guidelines
Custom mosaic work typically ranges from $200 to $500 per square foot, depending on:
- Size of the project
- Materials used
- Complexity of the design
Delivery and installation are priced separately.
Portraits and Smaller Works
Smaller, more intricate pieces, such as portraits or realistic interpretations from photographs, are priced individually. These often range from $1,500 to $3,000 per square foot, depending on the level of detail and material choices.
All mosaic fabrication is done entirely by hand by me, Bonnie Fitzgerald.
Timeline
- Small artworks or portraits: Typically take 30 to 90 days from design approval.
- Larger scale or architectural pieces: May take several months, depending on scope and complexity.
For larger installations, I may collaborate with a team of skilled artisans to assist in the fabrication. I personally supervise all work to ensure the highest quality.
Consultation & Design Fees
- Initial consultation is free.
In most cases, we can determine a price range over a brief phone call based on the size and vision for your project. - In-person consultations (if needed) are billed at $150/hour, plus travel expenses if outside the Washington, DC metro area.
- To determine an exact cost, a non-refundable design fee is required. This fee is based on the scope discussed during our initial consultation and typically ranges from $250 to $2,500.
What’s Included in the Design Fee?
Your design fee covers agreed-upon deliverables such as:
- A set number of original design concepts
- Material samples
- Scaled prototypes (if applicable)
- A detailed timeline and budget
Each commission is unique. I’ll work closely with you to ensure we meet your vision while maintaining efficiency and transparency throughout the process.

To help us get started smoothly, please consider the following questions:
- What is the approximate size of the mosaic you’d like to commission?
- Do you have a vision or imagery in mind? (e.g., flowers, portrait, abstract, architectural enhancement)
