Workshop

Tiny Tins

New

About Instructor

This is a NEW workshop inspired by a workshop taught by artist Joanna Kessel in Edinburgh, Scotland, designed exclusively for Maverick Mosaics. With her permission, we are offering a modified version with our own unique inspirations and twists. This will be the first time Bonnie is teaching this.

This workshop held at GLEN ECHO PARK, Glen Echo, MD.  Sign ups are through Glen Echo, click purchase to be linked.

Craft intricate mosaics using tins with hinged lids as your canvas. These unique containers will house your glass mosaics, our designs inspired by nature, our surroundings and whatever your imagination comes up with.

The workshop kicks off with creative exercises focused on design and color theory.

You’ll learn numerous techniques for working on a “micro” scale, including cutting and laying tricks. Our mosaic materials will be smalti, stained glass, milleflori, filati and small scall pebbles. Students welcome to supplement.  Demonstrations include preparing the tins using self-leveling concrete and tinted thin-set mortar.

By the end of the workshop, hopefully, you’ll have completed three separate pieces of art. You will be provided with TWO tins already prepared for mosaic, and you are welcome to bring up to six tins of your own. An early task will be filling empty tins with self leveling concrete – we will create a 3rd for your use and then fill any tins you bring. Tins must be clean and oil free – great and fun options: sardine tins and breath mint cans. Tins should be at least 3/4″ deep.

Mosaic experience is helpful but not required.

Separate supply fee $85.

Students are to supply the following: mosaic wheel tool, safety glasses, jewelry tweezers, pencil and few pieces of white paper, optional apron, optional magnifier or “Readers”.  These are recommended tweezers.

The images shown here are from the Edinburgh workshop, our will be different with a larger offering of mosaic materials and our own, local inspiartions.

We are often asked for local hotel recommendations. Sorry do not have any specifics. Look to either Bethesda, MD ($$), Tysons Corner, VA or McLean, VA (both are just across the bridge). There are also air B&B options.
