Experience the beauty and magic of Barcelona, Spain with Bonnie Fitzgerald and other mosaic enthusiasts. For those of you interested in our mosaic workshop we will spend five of our mornings creating mosaic art in the studio of Catalan artist Livia Garretta.  Bonnie and Livia will co-teach the workshop. This workshop will explore the signature style of trencadís, made famous by Antoni Gaudí—a joyful and liberating approach to mosaic that uses colorful broken ceramics to create vibrant, expressive designs. Livia is known for her fine art mosaics and has a long history of mosaic restoration on several iconic Barcelona sites.   Bonnie and Livia met in Washington DC at the Smithsonian Institution’s Folklife Festival. Needless to say, they became fast friends! For simplicity of booking we have 2 options: touring only or touring with workshop as an optional activity.

After lunch, we will explore Barcelona’s treasures.  The  “touring only” option allows you to enjoy all admissions and excursions outlined on the trip itinerary. It is exceptionally cost-effective for anyone who travels with a workshop participant and an excellent value for anyone who wants to visit Barcelona and see all the top sites hassle free. Many spouses have enjoyed this option. Please note all touring activities will be in the afternoons and evenings. For touring-only participants, you have the mornings free to relax or explore the city while others attend the workshop. Many meals are “on-own” and lots of free time is built into the schedule. A perfect balance.
We will walk and use public transit for most of our inner-city activities; Barcelona is transforming much of the city into pedestrian-only areas, accessible only by public transportation or on foot. A private coach will transport us on a few excursions out of the city and hard to get to locations. For all of our excursions and touring, we are accompanied by our Spanish-Catalonian speaking escort. We will visit Barcelona’s most magical sites including San Grada Famila, Casa Mila, Park Guell and more. But Gaudi wasn’t the only guy creating breath talking buildings, public spaces and private homes. You will be enlightened to this amazing city’s history and artists. On our last full day in Barcelona we will travel via private coach to Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. The group will enjoy a guided visit of the renowned Dalí Theatre-Museum. Later in the day we visit Empúries, where you explore the remarkable archaeological site that preserves the remains of both a Greek colony and a Roman city. THe day is capped off with a private, group dinner at Cafè de la Pedrera, inside one of Gaudi’s most famous constructions.
The mosaic workshop is limited to 13 students.

Our workshop projects will be the most amazing souvenir that you can imagine. With 15 hours of workshop time, you can expect to go home with a finished piece in the Trencadis tradition (broken dish and tile).  Liva’s studio is a treasure trove of materials. ALL supplies and tool loan included. Our artworks will fit in your suitcase and the studio is a 10 minute walk from our hotel.
