From Photo to Mosaic: Interpreting Place in Stained Glass Mosaic
Transform a favorite photograph into a vibrant stained glass mosaic while learning techniques that bring landscapes, architecture, gardens, and treasured places to life. Whether inspired by your home, a memorable vacation, a beautiful garden or a favorite scenic view, you’ll discover how to translate photographic detail into the expressive language of contemporary mosaic.
Through demonstrations and individualized instruction, you’ll learn how to simplify complex images, establish values and color relationships, and make thoughtful design decisions that create depth and realism. Bonnie will introduce several unique techniques for building dimension and visual interest, allowing your mosaic to move beyond a flat representation to one with a greater sense of space and atmosphere.
This is a 3.5 day immersive workshop.
This workshop is ideal for students with basic mosaic, or stained glass cutting, experience who are ready to strengthen their design skills and explore a more realistic approach to stained glass mosaic.
Students must submit their reference photograph to the instructor at least two weeks before the workshop. To maximize your studio time, Bonnie will prepare a custom-scaled pattern and resource images from your photograph prior to class. Included in the $60 supply fee are your printed resource images, custom pattern, and a properly prepared substrate, allowing you to begin creating your mosaic as soon as the workshop starts.
Also included in your overall workshop fee are the use of grinders and other hand tools as needed. And, access to ATISG scrap glass—yummy!
Students are responsible for providing their own stained glass and WeldBond glue. The ATISG store will remain open during workshop hours for your convenience. If you do not finish your mosaic during workshop hours, you will be sent home with materials and grout to do on your own.
Hopefully you’ll leave with a finished mosaic and practical techniques you can apply to future projects.
Students provide their own stained glass and tools. There are several close-by places for lunch, although you are welcome to brown-bag it. Tons of free parking.
Please note that portraits are not appropriate for this workshop.
