DIMENSIONAL EXTERIOR MOSAICS
About Instructor
Austin, Texas. This workshop is being hosted by the Austin Mosaic Guild, non-members may sign up, membership is not a requirement. When you select purchase to your right you will be taken to the Guild site, they are managing the roster and payments.
In this workshop, students create a 2-D bas-relief mosaic for exterior display. You will master appropriate tool use and learn proven construction methods to craft a unique and original sculptural form ready for your mosaic enhancements.
We kick off the workshop with a picture presentation sharing examples of contemporary works of this flavor. There are many steps to creating a dimensional substrate, and during a short four-hour first class, students design, cut, and assemble desired layers.
Subsequent days are spent working on the mosaic surface areas. The instructor demonstrates various mosaic techniques and creative approaches. By the end of the workshop, you will have completed a layered substrate enhanced with your choice of mosaic enhancements. The complexity of mosaic design and selected materials will impact whether you complete your project during workshop hours. The designs recommended by the instructor are with the workshop time frame in mind. Our adhesive is thin-set mortar.
Artworks are intended as exterior wall hangings, with a project size of approximately 2 square feet plus layers.
Prior to the workshop, the Instructor will provide pattern ideas and projects, keeping our time frame in mind. Students are welcome to create their own designs, but collaboration with the instructor in advance is strongly recommended.
