Ancient Motifs, Modern Materials
Workshop scheduled at Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, MD. DROP US AN EMAIL TO BE PRIORITY NOTIFIED, SIGN-UPS BEGIN AUGUST 11.
Friday & Saturday 10-4 and Sunday 10 – 12:30.
In this workshop, students create a modern interpretation of a classical mosaic design using unglazed ceramic porcelain. Inspired by designs from the Roman and Byzantine periods. Our modern interpretations will be of ancient motifs and subjects. Works are for interior display.
Traditional ANDAMENTO is the key to harmony and flow seen in classical mosaics. WE WILL SPEND A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF CLASS UNDERSTANDING THE ANDAMENTO YOU WILL USE IN YOUR SELECTED PATTERN.
If you do not finish your mosaic by end of the Sunday class you will be sent home with enough materials to complete it on your own. The adhesive must dry for 24 hours, our intention is to grout on Sunday.
Our mosaics are INSPIRED BY ancient mosaics, they ARE NOT reproductions. Most ancient mosaics were made with stone, marble, and/or smalti. The Romans used primarily black and white materials and a touch of terracotta.
A separate supply fee of $75 payable directly to the instructor includes a substrate, adhesives, tool loan, and ample supply of ceramic.
All skill levels are welcome. Minimum age 16.
