MOSAIC ARCHITECTURAL INSTALLATIONS & COMMUNITY PROJECTS
A 5 day intensive workshop will be held at Bonnie’s home studio in Northern Virginia and limited to just 7 students.
This workshop will guide you through the process of designing, fabricating and installing large-scale permanent mosaics for exterior or interior architectural settings. Personal instruction and hands-on experience aims to hone your skills and master materials suited for large scale and high traffic applications.
The workshop will be held in an open air studio, each student will have their own large workspace. Whatever VA state recommendations for Covid-safe practices in place will be adhered to.
Each student will create a personal mosaic using the mosaic technique most appropriate for their project design and materials. Based on your concept Bonnie will work with you IN ADVANCE to help you calculate amount of materials needed. Students are responsible for providing their project materials. Good project ideas include backsplashes, vestibule art work, table top, floor medallion. Project should not exceed 4 square feet.
Workshop includes numerous hand-out materials and resource information. If you do not have a project in mind no worries, there will be daily exercises geared to master various fabrication techniques.
We review design composition principles, color theory, andamento, lay patterns, transfer techniques and considerations for materials selection. Appropriate substrates, site selection and preparation, and fixatives will also be discussed. You will gain the confidence to create permanent installations to withstand moisture, extreme weather and freeze-thaw cycles
Additionally, you can gain experience in collaborative design, fabrication, and installation as a group by assisting in creating an architectural mosaic that will be designed by Bonnie and installed on her property. You’ll help mix mud (thin-set concrete), cut materials, and construct 2 and 3 dimensional artworks.
An optional comprehensive presentation and lecture will cover creative and technical approaches best suited for community work. When there are many hands involved there is magic to the art created, but there are lots of realities to be considered. You will learn the process of budgeting and bidding jobs, and share ideas for developing projects, recruiting and managing volunteers, and ways to gain the support of your local community.
If time permits we will go on a short field trip to a local school where there are several community projects installed, several are by Bonnie.
All levels welcome. Mosaic experience helpful but not necessary!
