This course is filled with experimentation, offering the opportunity to learn several new mosaic fabrication techniques. Final artworks are fabricated from the ground up. We make everything form the substrate to tessarae.
Day one we spend the morning creating our own clay tessarae. Using colored porcelains and rich terra-cotta clay bodies these will be kiln fired. Later on day 1 students engineer a handmade substrate using mortar and fiberglass. We also explore creating unique mosaic materials using colored mortar and learn about the nuances of working with pigments and colorants.
The following weekend your handmade ceramic materials will be ready for use, your substate fully cured and get ready for a wildly spontaneous experience. Students are introduced to traditional mosaic materials (marble, stone, smalti,) and craft an ungrouted, mosiac art-work using a variety of natural materials such as shells, pebbles and stones in combination with their personal ceramic pieces, broken china, glass tiles, and other materials. The materials selection will be vast.
You are led through the creative and technical processes to embed multiple layers of tesserae directly into a setting bed, which can be used to create complex textures. Mosaic design principles, lay patterns (andamento), and color theory are also covered.
BONUS: hammer and hardies loaned for days 2 & 3, initial training on this important mosaic tool and is how we will process our smalti and stone materials as needed.
A separate supply fee of $100 payable directly to instructor includes all materials to create handmade substrate, hanging devices, mortar, colorants, tool loan, and a generous and varied supply of mosaic materials, clay and kiln firing.
A supplemental supply list will be sent by instructor week in advance, although know that your supply fee covers everything you will need.
