ABSTRACT MOSAICS USING NATURAL MATERIALS

New

About Instructor

This workshop is for anyone who is open to experimentation and using natural materials in a mosaic context. The focus of this workshop is to be open to seeing and thinking differently while embracing the beauty of natural materials.

A separate supply fee covers everything you need to complete a project.  This is an extended weekend intensive course held at Bonnie’s home studio, with very limited enrollment! This workshop is best suited for those with some mosaic experience. We will be working with stone, pebbles, shells, handmade ceramic, and a few surprises. The magic of stone is the riven edge. When you cut the stone you are the first person to see the beauty of what is inside, its riven-edge. Sometimes there are fossils or crystals, they might be rough or smooth, and the relationship with the light breathes life into these hard and durable materials.

Students prepare the majority of their tesserae with the hammer and hardie and are encouraged to combine a variety of hues and textures. The majority of our first day will be spent preparing materials. Andamento and classical lay patterns will be practiced and preached extensively. We will be working in the direct method, setting directly into a mortar bed.

You will create a 10” x 8” (or thereabouts) artwork and our goal is to complete the artwork during our time together. If you do not finish we will send you home with enough materials to finish on your own. Included in the supply fee are all materials: a generous selection of stone, marble, pebbles, shells, adhesives, substrate, and inspiration images.

Some mosaic or stained glass experience is strongly recommended.  Basic cutting skills are a plus, but not required.  Insructor will provide numerous inspirational images to work from and there will be exercises to get you looking differently at a subject, to interpret abstractly.  Project size is with our time frame in mind.

Students also asked to bring few different size metal palette knives, safety glasses, apron, and wear close-toed shoes. Detailed note from instructor 1 week in advance as to how to best prepare, address, etc. Our adhesive is thin-set mortar and our substrate will be a polystyrene product (WediBoard, go-Board, etc.)

We will loan our well-worn tools including hammer & hardies.
