Louis J. Tiffany Inspired Mosaics
This workshop held at Anything in Stained Glass, Frederick, MD
The Tiffany Studios began producing mosaic artwork in the late 1870’s. These mosaics were known for their deeply saturated colors and lustrous surfaces. In this workshop we will create contemporary reproductions of Tiffany Mosaic Designs. There are many contemporary stained glass manufacturers creating glass mimicking the brilliant Favrile glass developed by the Tiffany Studios, and an exceptional selection is available at Anything in Stained Glass. Students will be guided through the process of fabrication of mosaics in the direct technique, creating a beautiful interior mosaic fine-art work.
Instructor will provide Tiffany inspired design patterns, substrates, adhesive and grout. Students provide own glass. ATISG store will be open throughout the workshop hours for your convenience and ATISG will loan hand tools if student does not already own. ATISG also provides access to their scrap, no charge, a bonus!
Class will begin with a historical overview of Tiffany Mosaics using the book The Mosaics of Louis Comfort Tiffany by Edith Crouch as a primary resource.
Students will be introduced to the nuances of working with stained glass as a mosaic material, including cutting techniques, sourcing and preparation of materials and fabrication methods. Mosaic or Stained glass experience helpful but not required.
