This is an 8 week class, Tuesdays, 1pm to 3:30pm. These classes fill up quickly, sign ups now happening!
If you love patterning, color, texture, and plenty of shine, this introduction to the ancient art of mosaics—with a contemporary twist—is the perfect workshop for you. Participants make beautiful 12-by-20-inch mosaic tapestries for interior display from a wide variety of materials.
We have offered this project in small format and are excited to be digging into a large scale version.
Create your original designs from a generous selection that includes glass and ceramic tiles, shiny glass, ball chain, costume jewelry, and beads (included in the supply fee). Participants may supplement the offerings with items such as Swarovski crystals, rhinestone chain, iridescent beads, millefiori, sequined trims, and anything that sparks the imagination.
Your supply fee covers all the materials you will need, although you are welcome to bring personal items such as costume jewelry, vintage china and beads.A suppplemental supply list may be downloaded from the Smithsonian sign up page no later than 2 weeks prior to the first session.
Pre-colored thin-set mortar is used to adhere tesserae to a concrete setting bed, and the finished tapestries are textural and remain ungrouted. No experience is necessary to participate.
This project is inspired by Laurel Skye, a dear friend who left us this past year, we urge you to read her book “Mosaic Renaissance: Reviving Classic Tile Art With Millefiori” available on amazon.com.
