Smalti is a traditional enameled-glass mosaic material with highly reflective qualities and a wide range of colors. Made from molten glass poured into flat slabs, cooled, and cut into individual pieces, smalti has been used for more than a thousand years throughout the world to produce beautiful mosaic artwork.
The weekend begins with a brief history of the material and a presentation of examples of both ancient and modern smalti artworks. There are many nuances to working with this special material, which can produce many visual effects through different ways of cutting and laying. Differences and similarities among Mexican, European, and Asian smalti are discussed. Students will work on a 10″ x 10″ mosaic of their own. Instructor supplied images, both abstract and figurative images available.
A $95 supply fee is payable to instructor at start of workshop, which covers a good selection of Mexican and Italian smalti , your substrate, design supplies, and adhesives. We will be working in a thin-set mortar setting bed.
Mexican smalti is known for a painterly effect, Italian for purity of color. We will be using both.
If student wishes to provide image must have instructor approval 2 weeks in advance and student must supply their own smalti. Supply fee will be adjusted accordingly.
Students please bring a good quality mosaic wheel tool. As an option students can also a bring hammer and hardie. There will be enough hammer and hardies available for students to share. Also bring a good quality long tip tweezers. A detailed tool/supply list will be sent out 2 weeks in advance.
If you do not finish your work during clsss you will be sent home with enough material to finish on your own. Pieces are not grouted.
If you are interested in purchasing a hammer and hardie and concerned about the “log”, drop us a note and we will guide you to purchase. We can also provide a “proper post/log”, which we cut custom.
