Introduction to Mosaics in Glass, weekend

About Instructor

Workshop Overview

This class is held at Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, MD. Drop us a note to be notified when signs ups begin, all is through Glen Echo.

The best place to jump in and learn about mosaics, the perfect “first class”!

Learn how to make your very own mosaic artwork. It is fun and easy to begin your journey of mastering the tools and materials that make this timeless art form so fascinating. In a lively and supportive creative environment, you will be introduced to a variety of materials used in mosaics and will learn to use mosaic tools to cut and shape glass into tesserae (the basic unit of mosaic) and to put them together to make your own work of art.

We will create using mostly glass materials: stained glass, vitreous tiles, shaped glass objects and other dazzling materials. This comprehensive class offers a strong foundation for constructing interior mosaics. Instructor will cover design, terminology, substrates, adhesives, finishing and more.

You will be guided through the design and creation process to create a 8” x 8” home décor piece for interior display.

During the first class there will be a comprehensive lecture and presentation about using classical mosaic techniques using glass products. You will be introduced to classical and contemporary design methods, and you’ll learn about appropriate construction. The remainder of the day is yours to explore the tools and materials while making your own personal mosaic piece.

The last day your artwork is grouted and all finishing options discussed. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own designs, but keep it SIMPLE. This is your first mosaic, not the Mona Lisa. However, if you feel more comfortable creating from an existing design, an ample selection of optional patterns and drawings will be available for you to use.
