About Instructor

The mosaic style of Trencadís was created by Antonio Gaudi during the heyday of Barcelona’s Modernist movement in the early 1900s. In this workshop be inspired by Gaudi and create joy-filled mosaics in this lively style.

Trencadís utilizes broken ceramic and occasional other oddities. The technique is fun and full of life.

Gaudi developed the Trencadís technique as a way to work FAST. This is an intuitive process, and during the workshop, students should look to complete project(s), yep more than one project! It was also a way for Gaudi to repurpose materials and useleft-overs.

Instructor provides all materials including ceramic tile, substrates, adhesive, and grout. Tool loan as needed. Students are welcome to supplement materials, but keep in mind we will be working primairly in tile, dishes, and crockery. We are embracing the technique of Trencadís. Let’s get our Gaudi on and have fun piecing beautiful mosaics together in a refreshing unstructured manner.

There will be a few different projects to choose from. Projects are intended for interior display (sorry that freeze-thaw cycle we have on the east coast is not experienced in Barcelona).

A separate supply fee of $65 is payable to the instructor at the start of class.

This workshop is inspired by Bonnie’s recent trip and workshop in Barcelona. Sharing space with a Spanish artist she was reminded of the joy and pleasure of working in an unstructured and joy-filled mosaic technique.

Workshop includes lecture, tons of eye candy, demonstrations and, of course, lots of creative fun.

All levels, 16+.

Students provide: Apron, Safety glasses, Wheel tool and/or tile nippers, Small hammer, Spatula to spread adhesive (we will use both thin-set mortar and white PVA glues, Old bath towel (you’ll get it when you need it), tweezers and any other tools you like to use in your mosaic practice.
